It feels good when someone handles the hard stuff. But in the new NDIS landscape, “done for you” support might actually put your future funding at risk.

Let’s be honest: the NDIS can be exhausting. With the confusion around the new ‘In and Out’ support lists, it is entirely natural to wish your Support Coordinator would just step in and handle everything for you.

However, there is a big difference between support and dependency.

Support Coordination was designed to be temporary for many people. It is there to build your skills. If your Coordinator does everything for you, they aren’t building your capacity. They are building a reliance that the NDIS may not fund forever.

Why “Doing It All” is Risky in 2025

The NDIS has changed. Since the legislative updates late last year, the Agency is looking closer at value for money and evidence of progress.

When you have a Plan Reassessment, the NDIS asks: “has this support increased the participant’s independence?”

If your Support Coordinator has done everything for you—made the calls, sent the emails, bought the consumables—we cannot prove you are building skills.

This leaves you with two risks:

  1. The Cliff Edge: If your funding stops, you are left without the skills to manage your own supports.

  2. Funding Cuts: The NDIS may view the lack of progress as a sign that Support Coordination isn’t working for you, and remove it from your next plan.

The Difference: “Doing For” vs. “Doing With”

A great Support Coordinator doesn’t just do the job. They teach you how to do the job.

At CoAbility, we follow a “Do With” model. Here is what that looks like in practice:

  • Buying Consumables:

    • The Old Way: We buy them for you.

    • The CoAbility Way: We sit with you. We show you how to check the “In and Out” list. We help you compare prices. Next time, you try it while we watch.

  • Booking Providers:

    • The Old Way: We make the call.

    • The CoAbility Way: We script the call together. You dial the number. We sit next to you for moral support in case you get stuck.

  • Solving Problems:

    • The Old Way: You call us in a panic; we fix it.

    • The CoAbility Way: You call us. We ask, “What do you think is the first step?” We guide you to the solution so you feel confident next time.

Building Your Safety Net

We know this sounds like hard work. It is often easier to let someone else take the wheel.

But true safety comes from knowing you can drive the car yourself.

Our goal is to make ourselves redundant. That sounds strange for a business to say! But we want you to reach a point where you feel so confident in navigating the system that you don’t need us anymore.

When we build your capacity, we provide the NDIS with evidence. We keep detailed notes on your “wins.” We track every new skill you learn. When your plan is reviewed, we present this evidence to show the NDIS that their investment in you is paying off.

Is It Time for a Change?

You deserve a team that believes in your potential. You need a Support Coordinator who will walk beside you, not in front of you.

If you feel like you are stuck in a cycle of reliance, let’s chat. We can help you build a roadmap to true independence.

Contact CoAbility today. Let’s take control of your NDIS journey, together.

I completely agree that “Support Coordination exists to help participants build the skills to manage their supports independently, not to create long-term reliance on a professional” is such a crucial point. Fostering independence through NDIS capacity building really sets participants up for long-term success rather than temporary relief. It’s interesting how subtle the line can be between helping and enabling. Great read, thanks!
