If you are new to the NDIS, or just trying to navigate the recent changes, you may have come across the term “Support Coordination.” But what does it actually mean? And do you really need it?
The NDIS has changed significantly over the last 18 months. With new legislation, stricter rules on what you can buy, and the introduction of the “In and Out” lists, having a guide by your side is no longer just a “nice-to-have”. For many, it is essential.
Here is the plain English breakdown of what Support Coordination is, how it works under the new rules, and how to find the right person to fight for your goals.
What is Support Coordination?
Support Coordination is a capacity-building support funded by the NDIS.
Unlike your Core budget (which pays for support workers or consumables), Support Coordination is designed to help you navigate the system itself.
Think of a Support Coordinator as your personal NDIS project manager. They don’t provide the hands-on care; instead, they work behind the scenes to:
-
Understand your plan: Translating the “NDIS speak” into real-world options.
-
Connect you: Finding the right providers (therapists, support workers, cleaners) who actually have availability.
-
Protect you: Helping you navigate the new Section 10 “In and Out” lists to ensure you don’t accidentally spend money on banned items.
-
Build your skills: Teaching you how to manage your own supports so you become less reliant on the system over time.
The “October 2024” Shift: What Changed?
You might notice some changes in how Support Coordination is discussed.
Since the “Getting the NDIS Back on Track” legislation was passed in October 2024, the NDIS has tightened the rules. The Agency is now looking closely at evidence and outcomes.
This means your Support Coordinator has a new, critical role: Evidence Gatherer. They are responsible for tracking your progress and collecting the proof needed to ensure you keep your funding at your next Plan Reassessment.
The Three Levels of Support
Funding is based on “reasonable and necessary” needs. Depending on your situation, you might see one of these three levels in your plan:
-
Level 1: Support Connection
-
The Basics: Short-term help to get you started and connected to providers. This is less common in complex plans.
-
-
Level 2: Coordination of Supports (Standard)
-
The Builder: Ongoing help to connect with services, resolve issues with providers, and ensure your budget lasts the full year. This is the most common level.
-
-
Level 3: Specialist Support Coordination
-
The Expert: For participants with high-level risks or complex barriers (e.g., justice interface, severe health complications). These coordinators are often qualified allied health professionals or social workers.
-
Why “Independence” is Your Safety Net
In the current NDIS market, you will hear a lot about “Conflict of Interest.” This happens when a company provides your Support Coordination and your Support Workers.
At CoAbility, we are proudly independent.
-
We do not provide support workers.
-
We do not provide housing.
-
We do not provide therapy.
Why does this matter? It means our advice is 100% unbiased. If a provider isn’t performing, we help you fire them and find a better one, without worrying about CoAbility losing revenue. In a system where every dollar counts, you need a Coordinator who answers only to you.
How We Help You Reach Your Goals
Your NDIS plan is just a PDF until you put it into action. Here is how we turn that document into a life:
-
Navigating the “In and Out” Lists: Confused if you can fund a smart watch or a gym membership? We check the new Section 10 legislation for you, so you don’t get a debt.
-
Crisis Management: If a provider cancels or your circumstances change, we step in to fix it.
-
Preparing for Review: We gather the reports from your OTs and Psychologists to prove to the NDIS that your funding is delivering results.
How to Find a Support Coordinator
If you have “Support Coordination” in your Capacity Building budget, the choice is yours. You are not stuck with the provider the NDIS suggests.
When interviewing a Coordinator, ask them:
-
“Are you independent, or do you also employ support workers?”
-
“How do you stay up to date with the legislative changes from late 2024?”
-
“How will you help me prepare for my next Plan Reassessment?”
Ready to Take Control?
Navigating the NDIS in late 2025 is complex, but you don’t have to do it alone.
If you are looking for a Coordinator who knows the legislation, values your independence, and will always be in your corner, we are here to help.
