If you’re new to the NDIS—or trying to get more from your plan—you may have come across the term Support Coordination. But what does it actually mean? And how can it help you live the life you want?

We’ll explain what Support Coordination is, how it works under the NDIS (especially with the latest updates from October 2024), and how to find the right Support Coordinator for you.

What is Support Coordination?

Support Coordination is a capacity-building support funded by the NDIS. It sits within your Capacity Building budget and is a stated support. This means you can’t use the funding set aside for Support Coordination for any other support.

The NDIA designed Support Coordination as a stand-alone service to help you understand your NDIS plan, connect with the right providers, and build your capacity to manage your supports independently over time. Not all plans include Support Coordination; funding is based on your individual needs and what is considered reasonable and necessary. If it’s not currently in your plan, you can ask your LAC about whether they might include it at your next plan review.

There are three levels of support coordination:

  • Support Connection – short-term help to get started with your plan.
  • Support Coordination – ongoing help to connect with services, resolve issues, and build capacity.
  • Specialist Support Coordination – for participants with complex needs or barriers to accessing services.

As of October 2024, these support types are now grouped under the updated Capacity Building category: Support Coordination and Plan Management. You’ll see this language reflected in your plan

What Does a Support Coordinator Actually Do?

Think of your Support Coordinator as your guide to maximising the benefits of your NDIS plan. They help you:

  • Understand your funding and the supports available to you.
  • Find and connect with NDIS-registered or unregistered providers.
  • Coordinate different services so they work well together.
  • Navigate any issues or changes that come up during your plan.
  • Build the skills and confidence to manage things on your own eventually.

At CoAbility, we take pride in our independence. This means we don’t provide other NDIS services, so our Support Coordinators are free from bias and offer participant-first advice—always focused on what works best for you.

How Can Support Coordination Help Me Reach My Goals?

Your NDIS plan is built around your goals—whether that’s improving your communication, finding work, becoming more independent, or getting out into the community.

Support Coordinators help by:

  • Linking you with the right therapies, supports, and programs. For example, if your goal is to find a part-time job, your Support Coordinator might connect you with employment services, help build your confidence, and work with your providers to make sure you have the right supports in place.
  • Creating action plans to move toward your goals.
  • Helping you stay on track and adjust when things change.
  • Liaising with services or the NDIA to help resolve issues and ensure your supports stay on track.

This kind of support is especially useful if your needs are changing, your plan is new or complex, or you’re just not sure where to start.

What Are the Benefits of Having a Support Coordinator?

Support Coordination helps take the pressure off. Instead of trying to figure it all out on your own, you get professional, person-centred guidance from someone who understands the NDIS system and is committed to upholding the NDIS Practice Standards and Code of Conduct.

Benefits include:

  • Less stress and confusion around how your funding works.
  • Support with budgeting and prioritising your supports.
  • A trusted person who can help you prepare for reviews.
  • More time and energy to focus on what matters to you.

How Do I Find a Support Coordinator?

If Support Coordination is included in your plan, you can choose who you work with. You can:

  • Ask your LAC, Planner, or current provider for suggestions. Your LAC can help you understand your plan and offer options, but the final decision is always yours.
  • Use the NDIS Provider Finder tool on the NDIS website to find registered providers.
  • Contact organisations like CoAbility that specialise in independent Support Coordination.

When choosing a Support Coordinator, ask about:

  • Their experience with your specific needs.
  • Whether they’re independent or part of a service provider.
  • Their communication style and availability.
  • How they approach goal-setting and reviews.
